Warm, honest and full of character, the antique solid pine chest of drawers is one of the most sought-after pieces in rural European furniture. Made chiefly between the early 19th century and the Belle Époque, these country pieces are recognised by their clean lines, hand-cut dovetail drawers and original ironwork or brass fittings. Pine, a soft and luminous wood, develops an incomparable golden patina over time — the surest sign of genuine age.
Our dealers offer a carefully chosen selection of rustic pine chests of drawers from regions such as Normandy, Brittany and the Massif Central, alongside Scandinavian and Alpine pieces. Browse the full range of antique commodes and chests to find the right piece for your interior.

Authenticating a genuine antique pine chest of drawers starts with the construction. Period drawers are hand-assembled with slightly irregular dovetail joints — no two are perfectly identical. The drawer bases should be solid wood, never plywood, and the runners will show natural, consistent wear that no reproduction can convincingly fake. Turn the piece around: the back and underside often bear the marks of hand planes and tenon saws that modern machinery simply does not replicate.
Patina is equally telling. Aged pine displays a honey-to-amber tone, sometimes lightly smoky, that cannot be artificially reproduced without leaving suspicious signs — excessive uniformity, the smell of fresh wax, or a suspiciously clean underside. Avoid pieces that have been stripped too recently, as they lose much of their heritage value. Original brass or wrought-iron fittings are a further guarantee of authenticity: replacements are usually shinier, thinner and less well-fitted than period hardware.
In terms of budget, a good honest pine chest in sound condition typically sells for between £180 and £550. A well-preserved regional piece with its original fittings and a beautiful patina can reach £900 to £2,200. Painted examples with polychrome decoration — particularly those from Alsace, Savoy or Scandinavian workshops — command a premium among collectors.
