Gilt bronze counterweight chandelier – swan and chimera decoration – 19th century

Richly chased and pierced gilt bronze chandelier, 19th century.

The central body, exceptionally finely worked, features an abundance of scrolling acanthus, foliage, palmettes and rocaille motifs, embellished with fantastic animal figures and swans forming part of the arms and decorative elements.

The chandelier is suspended by several long wrought bronze rods. It retains its remarkable original suspension system of chains and counterweights, which originally allowed the height of the fixture to be adjusted. The bronze counterweight is itself richly decorated with relief motifs.

The central section is enhanced by panels of red glass, lending depth and contrast to the gilding. A glass ball integrated into the interior mechanism is also noteworthy.

The numerous light arms are fitted with chased bronze bobeches and drip pans, ornamented with foliage and stylised motifs.

Exceptional quality of execution and profusion of detail throughout. The gilding displays an old patina, with wear, oxidation and traces of age consistent with the piece.

A particularly decorative chandelier, remarkable for its scale, the richness of its bronze work and the originality of its suspension mechanism.
