Description

This fine stoneware pitcher, also known as a "Pichet Marquis," is characteristic of the production from Sauxemesnil (also spelled Saussemesnil) in the Manche region. The piece depicts a bearded nobleman wearing a tricorn hat that serves as the spout; he is dressed in a long coat with a jabot-front shirt, his arms rounded and standing away from the body, his shoulders adorned with epaulettes, and his belly pleasingly rounded. On the reverse, the piece bears a mark that is difficult to decipher but may read "Neau."
20th century.
