Set of Six Chairs, Venice, Mid-18th Century

These six elegant Italian chairs from the Barocchetto period (1720–1770) are crafted in natural wood. The back, composed of vertical splats with sinuous lines, is in moulded wood trimmed with a small cord; the upper section is carved with scrolls and counter-scrolls, a small flower and stylised leaves, as well as motifs reminiscent of the French Régence style. The seat is upholstered; the seat rail is shaped and underlined by a cord that tapers off into a small volute at the upper third of the leg, whose foot takes the form of a hoof-shaped terminal with a few carved hairs falling over it. In very fine condition, these chairs have been recently re-stuffed; while the needlepoint fabric covering them is due for replacement, the padding itself is in perfect condition and should be preserved.
