Small Walnut Desk Table, Henri II style – Late 19th century

This elegant small walnut writing table, crafted in the late 19th century in the pure Henri II style, is distinguished by a rich carved ornamentation of flowering rinceaux, delicately scrolled foliage and finely modelled grotesques that animate its apron with Renaissance vigour. The apron conceals a large drawer. Its carefully turned baluster legs rest on robust twist-turned columns whose regular spirals bear witness to accomplished craftsmanship. These columns are joined by an H-stretcher, itself carved and punctuated by a central finial, lending the whole piece both structural stability and architectural elegance. The top, sober and noble, showcases the warmth of the walnut, while the drawer front reveals an exuberant carved décor that endows the piece with a remarkable sculptural presence. Taken together, this refined piece of furniture is typical of the Historicist creations of the late 19th century, in which the legacy of the French Renaissance is reinterpreted with splendour and precision.
