Description

This bentwood beech banquette, stamped J&J Kohn, is distinguished by the natural elegance of its lines and the exceptional mastery of bent wood that became emblematic of Viennese craftsmanship from the late 19th century onwards. Its steam-carefully shaped beech frame describes a harmonious silhouette in which every curve flows with an organic fluidity — from the delicately arched armrests to the back, composed of three bentwood elements that create a perfectly balanced visual rhythm. The caned seat, light and refined, lends a warm transparency that subtly contrasts with the density of the wood, while the slender legs, discreetly braced by a stretcher, provide elegant stability without ever weighing down the overall form. The J&J Kohn stamp, a guarantee of authenticity and prestige, places this piece firmly within the history of bentwood furniture, alongside the most sought-after creations of the period. At once functional and sculptural, this banquette integrates naturally into both contemporary and classical interiors, where it asserts its presence with noble restraint and timeless charm.

Founded in Vienna in 1849, the house of J. & J. Kohn became one of the foremost manufacturers of bentwood beech furniture through innovative industrial production and major collaborations with designers of the Vienna Secession, before merging with Mundus and then Thonet, and ultimately disappearing in 1937 under pressure from the Nazi regime.
J. & J. Kohn embodies the excellence of Viennese furniture-making, combining revolutionary technical mastery with a timeless elegance that left its mark on the history of European design and continues to this day to stand as a symbol of refinement.
