Description

Roll-top desk in marquetry walnut – Louis XVI period, late 18th century
Dimensions: H 118 × L 124 × P 63 cm

An elegant Louis XVI roll-top desk in walnut and marquetry, dating from the late 18th century. The restrained and refined façade is adorned with flame-figured panels and geometric reserves centred by marquetry rosettes. Fluted uprights, tapered legs and carved detailing further underscore the classical elegance of the piece.

The sliding tambour reveals a well-appointed interior comprising four small drawers, three storage compartments and a large writing surface covered in green leather. The mechanism operates smoothly and is fully functional. The lower section is fitted with three large drawers, each flanked by smaller lateral drawers on the façade, providing generous storage capacity. The brass locks and escutcheons are original, and the desk is offered with its key.

The piece is of fine cabinetmaking quality, with a warm patina and particularly decorative wood grain. A few restorations consistent with age and use, along with minor traces of time, are noted — principally to the back and certain interior areas — without affecting the structural integrity or the aesthetic of the piece.

This roll-top desk, at once elegant and functional, would be perfectly at home in a study, a library or a classically appointed interior, where it will bring the charm and refinement of late 18th-century French furniture.
