Description

Large signed glazed stoneware vase "Haut 49" – Studio work, circa 1950
Large cylindrical thrown stoneware vase with a slender silhouette and a free, irregular opening, characteristic of studio ceramics from the 1950s.

The decoration alternates reserves in brilliant honey glaze with broad areas in relief covered in a deep green glaze punctuated by metallic drops, alongside a prominent vertical panel in black and cobalt blue treated in a highly graphic manner. The overall composition is at once organic and abstract, typical of the plastic explorations of the post-war period.

The piece is made from high-quality chamotte stoneware, the firing of which brings out the natural nuances of the clay. Its considerable height and sculptural decoration make it a highly decorative work, capable of standing alone as a ceramic sculpture.

The vase bears a hand-written under-glaze inscription: "Haut 49", most likely a signature or studio mark accompanied by the date 1949, with no definitive attribution to date.

Condition: very good overall condition. No restoration or cracks. Some light wear consistent with age and use and minor surface chips to the rim.

Dimensions:

Height: 49 cm
