Description

Glazed terracotta gargoulette with fleur-de-lys decoration – French folk ware, 19th century

A fine glazed terracotta gargoulette of globular form, raised on a flared foot ring. It features a large overhead handle and two lateral spouts, one for filling and one for pouring water.

The entire body is decorated in relief with fleurs-de-lys and foliate motifs distributed across the shoulder and belly, highlighted in cream enamel that contrasts beautifully with a warm honey glaze showing fine age-related crazing. This decoration lends the piece a character that is at once rustic and refined.

Gargoulettes were traditionally used in the south of France to keep water cool, thanks to the natural porosity of terracotta. This example also makes a fine decorative object evoking the regional folk art tradition.

Good overall condition with a pleasing patina consistent with age and use. Minor enamel chips to the foot and slight marks of time are noted, with no impact on the overall presentation (see photographs).

An authentic piece that will sit naturally in a collection of antique ceramics or in a country-house interior.
