Description

Large Louis XV-style chimney mirror, 19th century

Dimensions:

Height: 166 cm
Width: 63 cm

An elegant Louis XV-style chimney mirror or trumeau in carved and gilt wood.

The lively, undulating silhouette of its frame, with the shaped scrollwork lines characteristic of the Rococo taste, is enhanced by a substantial pierced pediment abundantly carved with acanthus leaves, volutes, shells and flowers.

The frame features refined decoration of beaded mouldings and foliate motifs arranged along the uprights and spandrels.

The richly ornamented pediment bears witness to a particularly accomplished standard of carving.

The mirror retains its antique mercury glass — or at the very least period glass — displaying the subtle alterations and variations in tone that contribute to its charm and authenticity.

The reverse, with its antique parquetry backing, confirms traditional 19th-century craftsmanship.

By virtue of its harmonious proportions and fine decorative quality, this mirror will find its natural place above a fireplace, in an entrance hall, or as a centrepiece in a classically appointed interior.
