Burgundian Louis XIII Walnut Coffer, 17th Century

Authentic Burgundian coffer in solid walnut, Louis XIII period, dating from the 17th century.

Of sober and elegant rectangular form, it rests on flattened bun feet and features fine peripheral moulding around the lid and base.

The front is enhanced by its original wrought iron lock plate with a shaped keyhole escutcheon.

The single-plank lid is reinforced on the interior by three long original wrought iron strap hinges.

The interior retains its side storage compartment (document or valuables box), characteristic of antique regional coffers.

The wide-panel construction with visible dovetail joints bears witness to traditional 17th-century craftsmanship.

The walnut displays a fine honey-brown patina acquired over the centuries.

This type of coffer was used both for storing linen and for transporting and safeguarding valuables in Burgundian households.
