Henry Charles Séné studied at the École des Arts et Métiers in Châlons-sur-Marne, then, from 1906, under Fernand Cormon at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, where he was awarded an honourable mention in 1913, a silver medal in 1922, the Prix Rosa Bonheur in 1924, a gold medal in 1932 and a medal of honour in 1958.
Recognised as a painter of Orientalist and animal subjects, Séné championed the world of the real, drawing on the "modern vision" brought forth by the Impressionists. Like them, he broke free from centuries-old pictorial conventions to develop a new painterly technique in response to the desire to prioritise in painting the instantaneous "impression" over intellectual construction.
