Dauphiné Louis XIV Commode – Early 18th Century

DAUPHINÉ COMMODE, LOUIS XIV PERIOD – EARLY 18TH CENTURY

Slightly bombe commode featuring a rich marquetry in various veneers of precious woods: olivewood, end-grain wood, amaranth stringing, walnut, boxwood, light and dark wood stringing.

Opening to four drawers — two large and two small — with alternating light and dark wood veneers.

Drop handles connected by small floral motifs, keyhole escutcheons decorated with griffins, all in finely chiselled gilt bronze.

Sides centred with a lozenge decoration.

Rounded stiles with alternating light and dark wood.

Rounded front top surface decorated with a geometric pattern of circles, spandrels and a Maltese cross at the centre.

Carcass in pine, drawer bottoms in walnut.

French-polished finish.

A fine example of cabinet-making from the Grenoble region.
