Medallion portrait of a young boy by François-Gabriel Lépaulle.
Oil on canvas, signed G. Lépaulle and dated 1849 lower right (partially obscured by the rebate of the frame).
The subject is identified on the reverse of the frame with several additional annotations regarding his siblings:
"André Henri Gaillard 1841 – 1906, brother of Marie Blanche, wife of Hypolyte marquis de Persfrais? and of Marie Jeanne Gaillard"
The bust-length portrait of the young boy stands out against a light background of sky and an autumnal wooded park.
Original Louis XVI-style gilt frame, gold-leafed in two tones of gold.

Guillaume François-Gabriel Lépaulle (1804 – 1886): A pupil for a time of Horace Vernet, Lépaulle entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1819 on the recommendation of his principal masters, Bertin and Regnault. Having exhibited for the first time at the Salon of 1824, he specialised in history and genre painting, but above all in portraiture. He produced a considerable number of likenesses and exhibited them at virtually every Salon between 1827 and 1879. Lépaulle possessed a genuine talent, as noted for example by the Journal des Beaux-Arts et de la Littérature in 1839: "… his facility, his dexterity of brushwork, his rich and brilliant colour, his astonishing ease in handling accessories…". He is represented in the Galleries of Versailles by the full-length portraits of Admiral de Rigny, the Duc de Plaisance, and Napoléon III. He is also responsible for the paintings in the Chapelle Saint-Vincent-de-Paul at the église Saint-Merry.
