Description

Exceptional Regency / early Victorian period travelling writing box and correspondence set in ebonised wood and mahogany, made by the prestigious London stationer Thomas Lund.
A tambour shutter (flexible wooden-slat curtain) sliding smoothly. The upper section reveals three original compartments: two square lateral slots for inkwells and a removable central pen tray with canted sides. To the front, a large horizontal drawer provides generous storage space for paper, while writing accessories are housed in the two compartments opening from the top.
Superb original gilt brass hardware, comprising three chased drawer pulls with a stylised rosette motif.
Inside the drawer, the original green paper trade label is present and in excellent condition, bearing the inscription:
"Bought at THOs. LUND'S Superior Manufactory, 56 & 57, Cornhill, London."
This historic address allows the piece to be dated precisely to a period of exclusive activity by Thomas Lund between 1814 and 1845.
Excellent working order. The tambour shutter slides perfectly and the lower drawer operates smoothly, with no warping of the wood.
Very fine original patina. Minor surface marks consistent with age and use.
Glass inkwell bottles absent.
