Mazarine arbalète-form commode, 17th century, fruitwood, South-West France

Exceptional and important 17th-century Mazarine commode of arbalète form in fruitwood (wild cherry).
This commode comprises:
- 3 drawers arranged in 3 rows
- 3 locks without keys
- All handles and escutcheons in gilt chiselled bronze with Baroque decoration; original iron side handles.
The Mazarine commode is the ancestor of all commodes and is constructed like a chest.
Minor restoration consistent with age and use; the piece has retained its original ox-blood red patina — a finish that was reputed at the time to preserve the wood for longer.
This fine piece of furniture comes from a bourgeois house in South-West France.
