Louis XIV solid walnut armoire, richly moulded and marquetried – 18th century

An impressive two-door solid walnut armoire of exceptional quality, dating from the first half of the 18th century. The façade is richly architectural in character, featuring broad moulded panels enhanced by carved reserves and remarkable star-pattern marquetry medallions executed in various wood veneers.

The decorative scheme is further enriched by numerous carved and partially gilt ornaments — shells, scrolling foliage and acanthus — culminating in an imposing central cartouche above the doors. The rounded stiles, the projecting cornice and the turned bun feet lend the piece a striking elegance and commanding presence.

The interior retains its original box lock and period hardware throughout. The piece has developed a beautiful, warm and authentic patina. A few splits and traces of wear, inherent to its age, are visible but in no way detract from its character or structural integrity.

A superbly decorative armoire — at once restrained and spectacular — equally well suited to a classical or contemporary interior.
