Description

This charming bronze by Dubois reveals the full extent of the sculptor's talent for capturing the vitality and emotion of late 19th-century genre scenes. The figure — a young boy, a street crier with a disarming naturalness — is depicted in a spontaneous movement: his torso slightly thrust forward, one hand raised to his mouth as if calling out or making an announcement, while the other clasps a small jug, the emblematic attribute of the era's young water carriers and street vendors.
The modelling is exceptionally refined: the folds of the clothing, the seams, the patched areas of the trousers, the half-open shirt and the soft-brimmed hat together compose a silhouette full of life, imbued with a tender and narrative realism. The bare feet, superbly rendered, anchor the scene in the popular truthfulness so dear to Naturalist sculptors.
The brown patina enhances the volumes and the interplay of light across the surface of the bronze. The whole rests on a Griotte red veined marble pedestal, perfectly proportioned, which reinforces the sculptural presence of the piece.
Signed Dubois on the base, this sculpture is a sensitive and authentic work, ideal for an interior that combines charm and character.
