Description

This charming brown-patinated bronze depicts Pierrot as a musician, caught in a fleeting moment of life and lightness. The figure, leaning slightly forward, holds his mandolin close as he sings the celebrated melody *Au clair de la lune*, whose title is inscribed on the base. His expressive face — mouth half-open, eyebrows raised — perfectly conveys the wistful tenderness associated with this iconic figure of popular theatre.
Pierrot's traditional costume, with its wide ruff collar, loose-fitting trousers and soft hat, is rendered with exceptional refinement of modelling. A particularly captivating and charismatic piece, the sculpture bears the signature Bouret on the base, confirming the attribution to Eutrope Bouret (1833–1906), a sculptor celebrated for his poetic and sentimental figures of the late 19th century.
This bronze is a quintessential expression of the Belle Époque taste for graceful and theatrical subjects. It would sit equally well within a collection of decorative bronzes or in an interior seeking a touch of poetry and nostalgia.
