Description

Fall-front secretary in black lacquered wood with gilt bronze mounts – Boulle style, mid-19th century
Dimensions: H 141 × W 81 × D 40 cm

An elegant fall-front secretary in black lacquered wood, in the Boulle style, dating from the mid-19th century. Its sober, architectural form is beautifully enhanced by rich gilt bronze ornamentation comprising mascaron drops, beaded moldings, escutcheons, bail handles, corner appliques and sabots, in the finest tradition of the ceremonial furniture of the Napoléon III period inspired by the models of cabinetmaker André-Charles Boulle.

The piece is surmounted by an elegant veined black marble top, adding contrast and refinement. The fall front, adorned with a gilt bronze surround and a prominent central motif, opens to reveal a fully fitted interior comprising a stepped gallery, six small drawers, a central drawer and a writing surface lined in burgundy velvet. This arrangement provides a workspace that is both practical and elegant.

The lower section features three drawers to the front, with an additional drawer fitted beneath the marble top. The drawers are dovetail-jointed, attesting to careful craftsmanship. The whole is further enriched with finely chiseled locks and bronze mounts throughout.

The secretary retains a fine original patina. A few light marks consistent with age and use are visible, without detracting from its presentation or functionality.

An elegant and decorative piece, ideal for a study, a library or a classic interior, combining the refinement of French furniture with a remarkable quality of execution.
