Description

Pair of VIEUX PARIS porcelain vases with polychrome enamel and gilt decoration. This pair of vases of fine proportions depicts two themes with attributes: 1. a relief allegory of putti representing the hunt, sounding a horn over a recumbent stag; 2. a relief allegory of putti representing fishing with a catch of fish. The reverse of each vase features gilt decoration. Pair of vases in the manner of Jacob PETIT. French work, circa 1840.

A note on the history of the porcelain maker: Jacob Petit (1796–1868), also known as Jacob Mardochée, was a renowned French porcelain maker of the 19th century whose career began as a porcelain painter. Having established a solid reputation in the field, he founded his own porcelain manufactory in Fontainebleau around 1830. His artistic style, influenced by Rococo, is characterised by fanciful forms, vivid colours and elaborate decoration. Throughout his career he created a wide variety of pieces, including vases, statuettes, clocks and decorative objects. Despite some criticism regarding the exuberance of his work, Jacob Petit enjoyed great success among the 19th-century bourgeoisie in their pursuit of refinement and luxury. Today, his artistic contribution and craftsmanship are recognised and appreciated by collectors and art enthusiasts on the market.
