Description

Stations of the Cross – Jesus Falls Beneath the Cross (Third Station), 19th century

Dimensions:

Height: 96 cm
Width: 80 cm

Oil on canvas depicting a scene from the Stations of the Cross, illustrating the Third Station: the first fall of Christ beneath the weight of the Cross.

The composition shows Christ kneeling in the foreground, carrying the Cross and surrounded by soldiers as well as several Oriental figures.

In the background, an imposing fortified architectural setting evokes Jerusalem. The scene is rendered in the academic religious spirit of the 19th century, with a luminous palette and carefully constructed draughtsmanship.

This work was in all likelihood part of a larger series of Stations of the Cross intended for a church, chapel, or religious institution.

The square format, technique, and iconographic treatment are consistent with French or Belgian religious productions of the second half of the 19th century.
