Description

Important Renaissance-style fall-front secrétaire, 19th century

Dimensions:

Height: 195 cm
Width: 160 cm
Depth: 56 cm

A spectacular fall-front secrétaire in richly carved walnut, inspired by French and Italian Renaissance furniture.

This monumental piece is distinguished by the abundance and quality of its deeply carved decorative relief work.

The upper section features an imposing dentil cornice surmounting a façade ornamented with foliate scrollwork and mascarons.

The fall front is decorated with a remarkable carved panel depicting a mythological or Bacchic scene animated with putti and antique figures.

On either side, two female terms carved as caryatids support the architectural structure of the piece.

When opened, the fall front reveals a generous writing surface fitted with a decorative wrought-iron gallery.

The lower section opens by way of two doors carved in relief with pastoral and mythological scenes.

It is flanked by two male atlantes treated in the round, symbolically bearing the entire structure.

The refined execution of the carvings, the richness of the iconographic programme and the generous proportions are hallmarks of high-quality craftsmanship intended for the bourgeois or aristocratic interiors of the late 19th century.
