Description

Pair of Empire-period mahogany bergères,

France, circa 1820–1830

An elegant pair of Empire-period mahogany armchairs, raised on tapering sheath front legs and featuring remarkable carved armrests in the form of swan necks terminating in finely chiselled stylised heads.

The slightly reclining backs are crowned by a carved top rail decorated with foliate motifs.

The overall design retains the clean, balanced lines characteristic of Restauration-period furniture, heir to the Empire aesthetic.

The upholstery has been redone in a sumptuous crimson red fabric decorated with medallions and gilt rinceaux, offering a particularly elegant contrast with the warm tones of the mahogany.

The seat cushions are removable.

These bergères will sit equally at home in a classical interior or in a contemporary setting seeking pieces of character.

Condition

Very good overall condition.

Sound and stable structure.

Upholstery and fabric in very fine condition consistent with age and use.
