Description

This mahogany trunk presents itself as a sturdy chest, its deep patina bearing witness to a long history of journeys and crossings.
Its rectangular structure, reinforced by black metal corner brackets and dovetail joints, speaks to an exacting level of craftsmanship, designed to withstand travel by train, ocean liner, or horse-drawn carriage. The wood, burnished by time, still carries the marks of wear and handling, while the wrought metal side handles retain the raw strength of utilitarian objects from a bygone era. On both the top and the front, the name P. Tessier, stencilled in white lettering, asserts the identity of its owner and lends the whole piece an almost military or administrative character. To the front, two working locks with keys reinforce the impression of a precious object, built to safeguard personal or professional effects. A period shipping label, partially torn yet still legible, evokes a journey to Nantes, adding a documentary and poetic dimension to this trunk — as much a piece of furniture as a fragment of history, laden with travels, destinations, and lives passed through.
