Emile Tessier: Wall Fountain in Faïence – 20th Century

Charming decorative wall fountain comprising a wooden support (earlier) surmounted by a triangular pediment and a substantial mascaron in the form of a fantastical fish, moulded in white glazed faïence.

Water once flowed through the aperture at the fish's mouth, cascading down into a large matching shell-shaped basin.

This type of ornamental fountain was particularly popular in the winter gardens, orangeries, verandas and patios of the late 19th century.

The contrast between the patinated wood and the white faïence lends the ensemble a strongly evocative decorative character, reminiscent of the leisure residences of the period.

The wooden wall support displays a fine aged patina and appears to have been made specifically to house this ensemble.

The basin and mascaron are detachable.

Condition
Good overall presentational condition.

The faïence shows some wear, minor chips and lime scale deposits consistent with long-term use.
The wooden support retains its original patina and presents a few natural shrinkage cracks.
