This large bronze reduction of the Diane de Versailles commands a sovereign, dynamic presence, remaining faithful to one of the most iconic models of antiquity. The Roman goddess of the hunt, equated with Artemis in the Greek tradition, is depicted mid-stride, her left hand grasping the antlers of a small stag while her right hand reaches for an arrow from the quiver she carries across her shoulder. Her short tunic, finely detailed sandals, diadem and hair arranged in rippling waves tied at the nape of the neck bear witness to precise modelling and an exceptional command of the casting process. The stamp "Réduction mécanique A. Collas" applied to the base attests to a high-quality edition and allows the cast to be attributed to the prestigious Barbedienne foundry, whose expertise contributed greatly to the dissemination of the masterworks of antiquity throughout the 19th century. The model reproduces the celebrated Roman marble copy held at the Musée du Louvre, itself inspired by a Greek original of the 4th century BC generally attributed to the Athenian sculptor Leochares. Through its elegance, precision and historical legacy, this bronze brings together the mythological power of Diana, the nobility of a great antique model and the excellence of the foremost French founders, making it a collectible piece that is at once decorative, cultural and timeless.
