Description

An elegant brown-patinated bronze depicting a young man holding a kid goat above his head, attributed to the sculptor Charles Alphonse Achille Gumery (1827–1871), a celebrated artist of the Second Empire.

The model captivates through the grace of its composition: the slender figure adopts a supple contrapposto pose, one leg crossed over the other, lending the whole a natural and harmonious sense of movement. The youthful, smiling face, framed by fine curls, conveys a serene gentleness, while a fur pelt draped and thrown over the shoulder adds a note of classical refinement.

The kid goat, held aloft at arm's length, is rendered with particular care: finely textured coat, lively attitude, masterful balance. The piece as a whole attests to great virtuosity in the anatomical modelling and in the quality of the chasing — hallmarks of Gumery's work as a pupil of Jouffroy and a prominent figure of 19th-century academic sculpture.

The deep, even brown patina enhances the volumes and the interplay of light across the bronze surface. The work rests on a plain circular base that reinforces the verticality and elegance of the figure. The signature "Gumery, Rome" is inscribed on the terrace.

A rare and vibrant piece in which the artist's sensitivity meets the brilliance of bronze to bring to any interior a presence that is at once noble, alive and timeless.
