Netsuke - Gama Sennin Au Crapaud - XVIIIème - Bois

Superb wooden netsuke depicting Gama Sennin holding his staff in his right hand, and his magic toad in his left.

"The hermit with the toad" Gama sennin is the Japanese adaptation of "Liu Hai", one of the eight Chinese immortals.
A recluse living in the mountains, he was known for his skills in alchemy.
Legend has it that after rescuing a magical three-legged toad, the latter granted him incredible powers, including the ability to fly.

Japan, 18th century.
Note the fine facial expression and beautiful patina.
Traces of restoration on the right foot, and missing lower end of the hermit's staff.
