Netsuke - Woman with parchment and Kappa - Japan - 19th century

Surprising lacquered wood netsuke depicting a woman fighting over a scroll (or piece of cloth?) with a Kappa, a mischievous little aquatic yokai.

Japan, first half of the 19th century.

Good condition, superb patina showing successive layers of lacquer.
Natural Himotoshi, with the inro's rope able to pass through a series of holes between the two figures.
