Joseph Bail (1862 - 1921) - Still Life With Copper Pitcher

Charming oil on canvas by Joseph BAIL (1862 - 1921) depicting a still life with a copper pitcher.
Signed lower left.

Joseph Bail received an artistic education from his father, Jean-Antoine Bail, a painter from Lyon and an excellent master of intimism. From an early age, he drew on the traditions of his home town and the creative atmosphere of his home. This led him to depict sparkling objects adorned in rich, beautiful colours. In the 1880s, he moved to Paris, where he worked under Gérôme.
His first successes came in 1878, when he began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français. He won numerous awards, including a silver medal in 1889 and a gold medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. This brought him recognition and guaranteed him commissions.

His style, totally oriented towards the past, with a great sense of realism, won him another prize in 1902, at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he was awarded a medal of honour. Joseph Bail remained in favour with critics and collectors until the First World War, as a witness to tradition at a time when these values were being shaken up by the emergence of modernism.

Joseph Bail was a painter of discreet interiors, of bedrooms, kitchens and workshops where people did their work.
His use of light on clothes and objects was directly inspired by the Dutch Golden Age. Also greatly inspired by the works of Jean-Baptiste Chardin, his canvases come to life through a skilful play of contrasts.
