The lithography was invented at the end of the 18th C but developped only when Cheret invented  the "three stone" process in the 1880s which permitted the use of  a large spectre of colours.  Toulouse Lautrec famously used this method for Le Moulin Rouge poster  and lithography became very popular with the Art Nouveau posters of Alphonse Mucha.  Influenced by the Art Deco style, Capiello abandonned the extravagant curves of the Art Nouveau period and concentrated on one simple image, thus creating the logo and  the the modern advertising poster.  The propoganda poster was much used during the First World War .  By World War Two photo off-set was used to mass produce posters which became very popular during all the second half of the 20th Century both for advertising and as decoration.
