Ferdinand Barbedienne's first attempts to revive the ancient art of cloisonné (i.e. medieval French "champlevé") date back to 1858. Four years later, at the London World's Fair, the enamel inlaid objects exhibited on the Barbedienne stand caused a sensation. The heyday of cloisonné in France was between 1860 and 1880. Ferdinand Barbedienne's company produced many superb objects in this complex and rare technique.
