Henri BIVA, born on January 23, 1848 in Paris (commune of Montmartre), and died on February 2, 1929 in Paris, is a French painter of the school of Barbizon.
Henri Biva grew up in Montmartre in a family of artists. His brother Paul is also a painter. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studios of Leon Tanzi (1846-1913) and Alexandre Nozal (1852-1929), and also attended the courses of William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant and Jules Joseph Lefebvre at the Julian Academy. Biva exhibited two canvases at the Salon of 1879 in Paris.
He received a bronze medal at the 1900 World's Fair.
He is a member of the French Society of Artists where he is rewarded twice, and is decorated with the order of Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1900.
His canvases, painted on the motif, offer the peaceful nostalgia of the countryside of the past, without human activity. Qualified as a naturalistic painter, the influences of his teachers are reflected in the particular care he brings to his works, both in light and detail.
He concentrated mainly on the western suburbs of Paris, a painting made on the motif, a work, in nature, in front of the subject, often a landscape (as did the Impressionists) with his material, chassis covered and Easel, even if sometimes he finishes his paintings in workshop. His style varies between postimpressionism and realism with a naturalistic component, his painting is characterized by complex features and a pure palette bathed in natural light, the light of the present moment (Biva devotes a great attention to the effects of light and atmosphere) . Attracted by the effect produced by the constant and perceptible variations of light on the elements, Biva transcribes the immediate sensations, the luminous effects of sky and water, the colored scintillation of their relation of cause and effect.
