Oil on canvas, 17th century
Portrait of a decorated cardinal
It is interesting to note a strong physical resemblance with Cardinal Richelieu
This representation is characteristic of the art of portraiture in
the seventeenth and eighteenth century:
pose of three quarter face, insistence of look,
clothes and accessories honorific and social highlighted.
The cardinal is dressed in the black mozette edged with red,
the sleeves reveal the ratchet of white lace
(presence of the cap difficult to confirm on this painting).
The cardinal sports the Cross of the Order of the Holy Spirit,
an attribute of the high nobility, whose cardinals were originally from.
The canvas has been completely restored by a professional,
the cracks visible in the photos are absolutely stable and solidified.
No risk of material loss.
