Pewter was produced in large quantities in France during the 14th and 15th Centuries and replaced wooden items in tableware.  Known as the poor man's silver, it was richly decorated in the 16th C. It was replaced as table ware with the  developpement of glass-making and pottery, especially porcelain . The late 19th C saw a revival of interest as Medieval style decorative items and figurines.  There is now a strong collector's market for pewter items.
