Tapestries have long decorated walls in the homes of the rich.  In the 14th and 15th C Arras was an important textile center weaving tapestries with gold and silver threads.  Flanders took over as the tapestry center of Europe in the 16th C.  Under  Louis XIV the Royal Manufacturers of Gobelins and Beauvais were created in respectively 1660 and 1664 to promote French tapestries.  In the 17th and 18th C Aubusson developped its own highly successful industry. Today both Gobelins and Aubusson continue to produce high quality low warp tapestries
