Silver plate

Silver plate

Silver plate is a cheaper manner of providing household goods, such as tableware, cutlery and candlesticks, rather than by using more expensive solid silver.  It is produced by coating a metal with a thin layer of silver, silver plated bronze being considered of a higher quality than ordinary metal.  However, unlike solid silver, it tends to wear with time and use.  It developped with the invention of electroplating in the 1840s.
