The low table, usually called a coffee table, is  designed to be placed in front of a settee.  The first were designed at the end of the 19th C. and were influenced by Japan and the Ottoman Empire. The coffee table has become widely popular since the mid-20th C as they are low enough to placebooks and drinks upon and yet still view the television.  This has led to a market in antique tables which have had their legs reduced to form
