Lace is a delicate fabric made from using thread in a web like manner.   The thread is usually cotton, linen or silk, although gold and silver thread can also be used. It appeared in the late 16th C and was hand made until the mechanical lace machine was invented in the early 19th C.  Calais and the Haute Loire are the lace centers of France since the 19th C.
